MGP Sites
New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG) takes seriously its responsibility to our customers, the communities we serve, and the environment. As part of this commitment, NJNG is actively remediating and restoring the areas of its service territory where former manufactured gas plants (MGPs) once operated. This work is conducted in compliance with all applicable federal and state environmental laws and regulations. We strive to work cooperatively with the communities where the sites are located. These areas include:
Aberdeen, NJ
The Aberdeen site, which is located on Lower Main Street in Aberdeen Township, began operating as the Matawan & Keyport Gas Light Co. in the early 1900’s. This MGP ceased operations in 1910 when the Atlantic Highlands MGP began operating and gas was piped from Atlantic Highlands to the Aberdeen site.
NJNG is actively investigating potential impacts associated with the historic operation of the former Aberdeen MGP. NJNG continues to work with township officials and affected property owners regarding any concerns and ensures all MGP-related impacts are appropriately addressed.

Atlantic Highlands, NJ
The Atlantic Highlands site, which was located on West Lincoln Avenue, operated as an MGP from 1910 until 1949, when all MGP operations were discontinued.
NJNG is actively working to investigate and remediate any impacts resulting from the historic operation of the former MGP. We continue to work cooperatively with municipal officials and residents to complete this work as efficiently as possible and to restore the site and all affected properties.

Freehold, NJ
The Freehold former MGP was located off Spring Street in Freehold Borough. It began operating in 1857 as the Freehold Gas and Light Company and later merged with the Standard Gas Company in 1916. At that time, all MGP operations were shut down and the site began receiving gas piped from the Atlantic Highlands MGP. Shortly thereafter, all MGP production facilities were demolished, and the site was used solely to store gas.
NJNG began investigating the Freehold site in 2018, and we continue to work cooperatively with residents and the borough to address any concerns and develop a scope of work for any necessary improvements.

Long Branch, NJ
The Long Branch former MGP was located along Long Branch Avenue in Long Branch, N.J. It first operated as an MGP in 1860 and was called the Long Branch Gas and Light Company. Over time, several companies operated the facility. By 1961, all manufacturing gas operations at the site ceased and portions of the property were sold or leased to private parties. By 1991, all plant structures were demolished and removed.
NJNG has conducted numerous investigation and remediation activities at the site, including multiple phases of on- and off-site soil excavations and creek cleanup and restoration activities. NJNG continues to work cooperatively with municipal officials and the Long Branch community to restore the site and surrounding properties.

Toms River, NJ
The Toms River MGP, which was located off Herflicker Boulevard, began operating as the Toms River and Island Heights Electric and Power Company in 1900. Several companies operated the MGP up to 1950, when all MGP operations ceased. By 1975, all site buildings were demolished.
NJNG is actively conducting remediation and restoration activities in the area around the former MGP site. We continue to work cooperatively with the township officials and the community to complete the necessary improvements.
