NEW JERSEY NATURAL GAS WANTS TO HELP SAFEGUARD CUSTOMERS FROM UTILITY SCAMS BY RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS OF FRAUD
02/27/2025 - For Immediate Release“The safety and security of our customers are top priorities for New Jersey Natural Gas,” said Marissa Travaline, vice president of Customer Service, Marketing and Energy Efficiency at New Jersey Natural Gas. “National Consumer Protection Week offers a great opportunity to make sure customers know how to spot scams and take steps to protect themselves. Taking action and reporting fraudulent behavior is critical to helping prevent scams and protecting consumers.”
Created by the Federal Trade Commission, National Consumer Protection Week is an annual nationwide advocacy and awareness campaign held each March to educate consumers about their rights, protect them from deceptive practices and empower customers to take action against fraudulent activity.
NJNG is committed to providing customers the tools and resources to help safeguard their personal and financial information and protect themselves falling victim to scammers, including those attempting to impersonate utility representatives. Here are some common tactics to watch out for:
- Demanding immediate payment via prepaid credit card, Venmo®, Apple Pay® or other options that cannot be traced or recalled. NJNG only accepts online payments via its online customer portal at myaccount.njng.com. (Apple Pay is a registered trademark of Apple Inc.)
- Falsifying caller ID and sending phishing emails that appear to be from your utility. Emails from NJNG are sent from @njng.com or @4you.njng.com
- Contacting customers via live or automated calls claiming immediate necessary payment is needed to avoid a service disconnection.
- “Slamming” scams that switch customers to another energy supplier without their authorization. Customers are encouraged to use caution when sharing their NJNG account number and to fully evaluate any offer before agreeing.
NJNG communicates through written notices via mail and attempts to work with customers to find payment solutions. An NJNG employee will never demand immediate payment or request sensitive information from a customer. If customers fear they have fallen victim to a scam, they should report the incident to NJNG at 800-221-0051 and fill out a report form at reportfraud.ftc.gov/assistant.
