As a company headquartered at the Jersey Shore, we recognize the recreational, ecological and environmental value the coast offers for all residents. That’s why in 2021, we launched the Coastal Climate Initiative to advance environmental restoration, preservation and stewardship in our coastal communities and beyond.
Under this initiative, we committed $2 million in funding over the next five years to support projects and programs designed to improve the resiliency of our ecosystems and impacts from climate change, as well as strengthen community engagement and environmental education.
Advancing the Coastal Climate Initiative’s Mission
We continue to establish and cultivate partnerships, working in tandem to build stronger and more resilient communities. Since inception of CCI, we have supported the important work these nonprofits are doing in our local communities.
Project: Five-year funding commitment of $500,000 to reduce invasive species and maintain forest health; restore biodiversity and ecosystem function, including water quality benefits, greater climate resilience, and site improvements that reduce erosion and mitigate storm and flood water flows; expand public access and education through trail and facility improvements.
Project: Funding of $17,500 to help support three related projects: American Oystercatcher (AMOY) Beach Nesting Bird Survey, a Coastal Resilience Eco-Education Program, and enhancements to their current Soaring with STEAM Educational Program.
Project: Restoration of saltwater tidal wetlands in the Barnegat Bay Watershed and beyond. With the support of NJNG customers and a dollar-for-dollar company match, nearly $100,000 has been donated directly to TNC for this important work.
Project:Five-year funding commitment of $560,000 for the preservation and restoration of the Hovnanian Sanctuary in Berkeley Township, Ocean County – part of NJNG’s service territory. This work includes the enhancement of 100 acres of upland forest, restoration of over 15 acres of Atlantic white cedar forest and improvements of over 5 miles of walking trails, mapping and signage.
